Access Unlocked Friday April 3, 2026 United Airlines has lifted checked-baggage fees by $10 for many trips in North America, a move the carrier is linking to cost pressure from jet fuel and other operating expenses.
Airlines frequently adjust optional fees when costs rise, using baggage and other add-ons to offset expenses without changing advertised base fares as quickly.
United’s updated schedule typically prices a first checked bag at $45 when purchased online ahead of time and $50 when bought within 24 hours of departure; the second checked bag rose by $10 as well. The airline said some customers can still receive checked-bag allowances, including certain MileagePlus members, eligible United-branded credit card holders, active-duty military personnel and travelers in premium cabins, though exact fees depend on the route and fare.
