Access Unlocked Saturday May 2, 2026 Spirit Airlines, the Dania Beach, Florida-based budget carrier that started life in 1964 as Clippert Trucking Company and launched charter flights in 1983, is officially grounded for good. The airline folded after bailout talks with creditors and the Trump administration imploded. Spirit blamed sky-high fuel costs tied to the 2026 Iran war, but years of losses, failed merger plays, and two bankruptcies had already pushed the airline to the brink. Its final flight touched down at Dallas–Fort Worth just after midnight on May 2, 2026.
Spirit says travelers who booked directly with the airline will receive an automatic refund to their original payment method within 7 to 10 business days.
